A weekend cottage for guest to maintain their privacy from the main house.
The cottage was originally built for the family to stay in while they built the main house. Over the years it became the guest cottage for the weekenders were able to maintain their privacy from the main house. Now the homeowners rent the cottage as another source of income. The renters were taken by surprise when a tree fell on the roof cutting the house in two. This gave them the chance to redesign the layout to maximize the views of the lake.

Process
Twenty years prior owners hired Caren to renovate the cottage for renting purposes.
The original renovation was merely updating finishes and siding.
After the tree hit the roof there was major structural damage.
Replacing the roof gave them the opportunity to apply for a variance to raise the roof adding a gable dormer facing the lake.
The main living spaces were switched to the other side of the house to be able to see the lake
A bathroom/ laundry room was added to the basement
